How I lost 54 pounds in my early 30’s and gained 20 pounds in early 40’s and lost it?
Sorry, I don’t have six packs abs to show-up. That’s because I never tried to get six pack or reduce body fat below 2 digit. For me, more than sexy abs, getting healthy was important.
Now I’m a middle aged man and consider myself to be a responsible family man. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have fun or weekend Vodka! Yes, I continue to enjoy life, love and drinks despite occasional arguments and fights with my spouse.
My weight loss journey
It was probably in 2008 when I was just 32-year-old angry-man who had to take serious note on my health. I was forced to undergo a medical test for free insurance policy provided by my employer. The report came, and it was alarming. My fasting blood sugar was 123mg/DL & I was pre-diabetic at such a young age. Moreover, my total cholesterol was 265mg/DL and triglyceride was 198mg/DL. Meaning, I was at the risk of cardiac arrest soon!
10 years later I’m still alive and happy. My most recent medical report made me more than happy. My fasting sugar is 90mg/DL, total cholesterol is 140mg/DL, and triglyceride is 120mg/DL. I would still love to keep my blood sugar below 85. That would make me a healthiest man on the earth!
Why workouts are necessary?
See, anyone can lose weight by diet alone. In fact, you get 80-90% result from dietary calorie deficit alone. Then why sweat so much for remaining 10% result?
That is the trick.
Your diet will almost always fail if you don’t work out. If you are doing strength training with weight you never get the cravings for junks. You will think about yesterday’s hard-work before eating an ice cream; you’ll think about your struggle before taking a bite of donuts. Your brain would awaken you before kissing a beer bottle.
Why strength training?
I’m not saying that cardio is useless like some experts. Cardio is still good for overall health and fitness. But when it comes to weight loss you must engage in aerobic strength training… lift more and lift heavy, both men and women (gender equality!)
Like everyone I used to do cardio on treadmill, ellipticals and some isolated muscle training at the end. After my workout session was over, I was feeling exhausted, energy less and hungry. There are instances when I ate like an Elephant after workout. I know, this is the problem for many.
Cardio workouts gives you easy excuses to deviate from your diet. For ex ‘I’ll eat Ice-cream today & walk 20 minutes more!’ – because walking 20 minutes is easy, lifting 20 pounds more is not easy!
Once I started weight training everything came under control. After each session I would feel great, energized (because body releases lots of energy by burning fat). This energy boost doesn’t last forever. Yet, it is good for 1-2 hours, and that is the time when I eat sensibly.
Are you doing cardio?
Supplements help, but it is the hard work which gave me all the result. I have started this blog to share my experience on various product I have tried or currently using.
Here is the list of 3 product I used
Turbulence Training by Craig Ballantyne is the first fitness program for which I paid money. In his course, Craig shares great amount of solid information on nutrition and strength training.
This is the workout program (plus the supplement) which helped me to lose 50 pounds of pure fat and regain my life.
Initially the course was designed around 45-minutes workout. Few years ago, Craig updated the course material and designed the program around 30-minutes workout to help busy people. Read my detailed review here.
Yup, I have used diet pill during the course of shedding 54 pounds. But that was almost 10 years ago. Phen375 is a reformulated version of Phentermine prescription-only drug.
It is the most convenient fat burner for both men and women. You just have to take 1 tablet before breakfast. That’s it. Read my detailed review here.
Most men feel the impact of testosterone after they hit 40. Losing muscle mass, feeling fatigue, burgeoning belly fat and dwindling sexlife are the results of lowering Testo
2 years ago I used Testogen for 3 months to lose 20 pounds and regain most of youth power. Sure, no supplements will make you feel 20 again. Read my detailed review here
How is my life now?
I have quit my full time job 3 years ago now I’m full time blogger. I have a wonderful family to look after, so I only workout 3 a days a week; Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
When I hit the gym, I only do weight lifting and don’t waste time on treadmill or ellipticals. That is the golden nugget I learned from Craig Ballantyne’s Turbulence Training course.
On non-workout days, I do light cardios like playing with kids, going for walk or cycling. Therefore, my advice to anyone is that ‘try to spend at least an hour for your fitness & health daily, there is 24 hours in a day’. Don’t give ‘I’m busy’ excuse.
I have sticked to 16:8 intermittent fasting (last meal at 8pm and not eating anything until next day 12pm, which means 16 hours fasting daily!) I recommend everyone to stick to at least 12 hour fasting strictly. Meaning, if you eat your last meal today at 8PM, then don’t eat anything until tomorrow morning 8 except water. I have learnt lot from Brad Pillian’s Eat Stop Eat course. See this for more info
Fun & drinks
I love eating when we go out or social events. However, I have built a habit to fast on next day. Binge eating is still dangerous, no matter what you do later. By fasting, I drastically reduce the danger and guilty feeling
I still love drinks, especially vodka on weekends. I quit smoking long ago, still smoke occasionally in social events. Enjoying life is important to me. I’m not taking any prescription drugs since I have no lifestyle diseases like diabetes or high BP. Some of my friends are already taking half dozen prescription pills daily, not me… ever!
Love & romance
Sex is no longer ‘an activity of adventure’ or ‘doing for the sake of doing it’. Sex is not merely a physical activity, it is an emotional activity; emotional meaning feeling connected with your spouse; feeling loved, admired and appreciated.
For me twice a week sex is good, but it hasn’t crossed more than 3 times in the last 2-3 years!
Of Course, there are those occasional frustrations; like, when you are in great mood she gets her period. Or when she is about to climb on top of you, you suddenly become flaccid due to mental distraction or sometime for no-reason. It happens and happens to all.
That’s about me
